In the meantime, we are far beyond normal. But whining doesn’t help. There is a lot to do. What and how? Buffett, the richest man in the world, told the New York Times in November 2006. (290) He did not mean it aggressively, he even criticized that rich people have to pay too little tax. He only noted what no German politician or banker can get over his lips. The war is not over, it is entering a new, harder phase.

Buffett supported Barack Obama in the election campaign, and he has been advising him since he became president. The US is experiencing its economic “Pearl Harbor,” Buffett declared in early 2009. Obama is the man who can “correctly convey the gravity of the economic situation to Americans” and who “at the same time spreads hope for improvement.” (291)
 
How threatened would the ruling order be if people had no hope and no president who simultaneously appears to them as the embodiment of Abraham Lincoln, Motown and Martin Luther King’s “dream”? At the time of deep social crises, the more moderate faction of the state-supporting parties in the centers of capitalism occasionally has to come to power.
 
Bill Clinton also became president in a crisis. If a Republican US president had cut social spending as rigidly as he did, angry protests would have erupted. In Germany, the SPD and the Greens came to power in 1998 when far-reaching cuts had to be implemented. The country was to go to its first war since 1945, and the upheaval of the welfare state was imminent.
 
Schroeder’s saying of the “cook” (Schröder) and the “waiter” (Joseph Fischer), with whom he wanted to clarify the hierarchy between himself and his Green foreign minister, is unintentionally enlightening because he ignores the question of ownership: Who owns the pub and the building in which it is located? The one who has the capital is served by both the cook and the waiter.

Barack Obama is a charismatic technocrat, a modernizer of capitalism whose historic task will be to hold the US together in the Great Depression so that there is no chaos at the end of which the ruling order would be shattered. The regulatory project implies that poverty will increase during his term of office. That the social question – if those affected do not surrender to their fate – will continue to be “solved” primarily by the army, police and judiciary. And that he will have to integrate and pressure any further protest so that there will be no broad anti-capitalist movement from below (unless the world economic crisis leads to a collapse, but then very different developments are possible, in all directions). Some have correctly analyzed the path to the coming world economic crisis. These were mainly Marxists, but also critical bourgeois scholars such as Nouriel Roubini, a professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Roubini says, “I’m not a genius, I just looked right.” He analyzed the financial crises in Mexico in 1994, Asia in 1997 and Argentina in 2000 and found indicators that he applied to the United States. And he came to the conclusion in 2005 that a recession was imminent in the US. He presented his theses to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2006: In the US, the real estate market would collapse, he concluded, an oil shock was imminent, the consumer climate would collapse, trillions of dollars in mortgage loans would become rotten, the global financial system would be shaken, banks and hedge funds would go under. And all this on a global scale. When it ended, the presenter said, “I think we need a strong drink now.” Some listeners laughed. (292) When Roubini predicted a crisis at the World Economic Forum in Davos in early January 2007, he was an outsider and ridiculed. Some of his counterparties are now bankrupt or have been bought up by the state. (293) The recession had already begun, and its signs could no longer be overlooked, but as late as May 2008, Josef Ackermann, the head of Deutsche Bank, saw “no evidence of a new global economic crisis.” (294) It was not until the end of 2008 that the German Government admitted a recession. In early 2009, the same mainstreams who had been applauding capital for decades and talking about limitless profits and the deregulating state babbled that the crisis would be over in the summer of 2009. As if they had become clever in the meantime. But the crisis will spread and last at least another year, roubini said at the beginning of 2009: “The worst is yet to come.” In addition to the US, Europe, Russia and China would also be hit “hard”. He suspected that the US economy was threatened with losses of 3.6 trillion US dollars as a result of the crisis. “If he were right, then the entire American banking system would be de facto insolvent,” wrote Nikolaus Piper in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. (295)
 
But even that is not the end of the forecast. Some Western European states are wobbling, and few could react like the US or the strongest European states, helping banks and corporations out of trouble with large sums of billions.
This can trigger new chain reactions. What impact will the crisis have on China and, via China, back on the US, Africa and Latin America?
And to Russia, which had recovered economically after a long period of weakness after the collapse of the Soviet Union, mainly due to its wealth of raw materials?/296)
 
The Russian government also quickly pumped more than 100 billion US dollars into the Russian banking system and tried to save important industries and corporations with nationalizations and, if necessary, with state loans. (297) Who will be most weakened by the global economic crisis in the fight for influence in the resource-rich regions of the world – Russia, the USA, China or EU-Europe? While heads of state want to persuade us that everyone is pulling in the same direction, they are lurking in the interests of the strongest capital factions behind them.
 
Secure access to energy reserves plays an essential role in the way out of the crisis. The war between Russia and US-backed Georgia in August 2008 was just one of many pre-skirmishes. The round went to Russia. By sending more troops to Afghanistan, the Obama administration is once again changing the balance of power. (298)
 
Even under Obama, the US will try to install a government in Afghanistan that suits it, because it is in its interest to establish stable military bases that will allow Afghanistan to become a corridor for the abundant oil from Central Asia. Central Asia is known to have no sea links, and on other routes the interests or territories of Russia or Iran stand in the way. Before one falls for the US or even German human rights justification, one should remember whose product the Taliban or their predecessors, the Mujahideen, are also – that of the USA.
 
And I remember German media trying to legitimize German troops in Afghanistan by showing a demonstration of “liberated” Afghan women without burqas – until it turned out that this “demonstration” had not even taken place in the open street, but in some courtyard behind walls. This should be noted in preparation for the expected next propaganda campaigns. (299) The effects that the world economic crisis will have on the new imperialist regional power China and its world power and, in the feedback, then again on us are unforeseeable. Mass poverty, environmental disasters, uprisings, secession efforts fueled from outside, geostrategic conflicts between the USA, Russia, China, EU-Europe and other Asian states – you don’t need much imagination to sense the war-prone potential in Central Asia alone. But also in Latin America: What consequences will the recession in China have for the support of progressive governments such as Cuba or Venezuela? As I was writing this book, the official number of additional jobs lost worldwide increased by at least 50 million. We do not yet know how big it will be at the height of the Great Depression. And we also don’t know how many people will have died at the end of the crisis because of them in which parts of the world, immediately or a little later, because the lack of clean water and diverse nutrition actually makes harmless diseases deadly and because wars are being waged and expanded. If the nutrition programs of charities shrink, what will become of the Sahraouis? If the use of carcinogenic pesticides remains cheaper than a switch to healthy cotton farming methods, what will become of Uzbek agricultural workers? If there is no money and no will to modernize irrigation methods along the Amudarja and Syrdarja, what will become of the Kazakhs? None of this interests the powerful as long as the oil flows unhindered through the pipelines. “Distressed banks” must be saved, not the climate – and doesn’t the climate catastrophe also have some advantages, such as the fact that it is now easier to access the resources at the North Pole? Civil wars, drought, disease and poverty will not only lead to uprisings, but also to more people, for example from Africa, trying to reach Europe. Even more migrants will drown in the Mediterranean under the eyes of German police officers. Will the capitalist centers succeed in keeping their own ghettos under control while saving a larger section of the middle class from collapse? And if so, at what price and on what piles of corpses? Many people suppress the situation as if the dramatic changes were none of their business – as long as it does not affect them personally. Others freeze and gaze at the hunter like a rabbit. With such an ignorant or fearful attitude, one generally gets away with it quite well as an uncritical inhabitant of a capitalist center. For the most part, the social disasters are successfully exported. And the fact that many people have a thoroughly mendacious image of the world is also entirely in the interest of the tourism companies. Now, however, the crisis may be so great that all suppression is no longer useful. Perspectives are shaken up, younger people grow up with a fundamentally changed image of the world, bastions of self-evidentness are torn down. For critical people, this is an opportunity. If our lives and those of other people are not to be more miserable, less free, more hopeless tomorrow than they are today, we must defend ourselves. Loud and unmistakable. We have no other choice. The other side does not hesitate for a second. It’s about the whole. Capital is using the crisis to get rid of everything that restricts profit: social and democratic human rights (what is left of them), environmental requirements of all kinds – free travel as it has not been for a long time for their poison and contamination production, including a renaissance of radioactive nuclear power generation.
